Default Statistics: Private and Sub-Sovereign Lending 2001-2019

Global Emerging Markets Risk Database consortium (GEMs)

The Global Emerging Markets Risk Database consortium (GEMs consortium) is joint initiative of the European Investment Bank and the International Finance Corporation to pool data on credit defaults from investment in emerging markets.

This is the first publication on default statistics from GEMs multilateral and development bank and development finance institution members. To date, scarcity of data on scaled investment in emerging markets means many institutions remain overly reliant on risk assumptions. The unprecedented data harmonization facilitated by GEMs, breaks down output statistics across a number of dimensions, including geography, sector and credit assessment, to help the MDB and DFI communities calibrate and establish strong internal benchmarks for improved investment decisions.
