Andrew Gunther has over 30 years experience in emerging markets investment and development finance. Since 2021 he has worked as an independent consultant with an emphasis on impact and climate finance investments for large foundations, multinational development banks, and impact investors. His remit includes strategy, implementation of organizational change, and direct investing. His clients have included Development Finance Institutions (e.g., IFC, IDB Invest, Africa50), asset managers (DWM, Stratus), foundations (Open Society Foundations), corporates (Vale), NGOs (WRI), and many others.
From 2011 to 2021, Andrew Gunther served as a Managing Director overseeing investments in infrastructure in Latin America for Darby, a global emerging markets private equity firm that is part of Franklin Templeton. Andrew raised, led the investment of, and chaired the investment committee of an over $200 million fund dedicated to renewable energy in Latin America.
Previously he worked for the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank. From 2007 until 2010, he was the IFC’s Country Manager for Brazil based in Sao Paulo. From 2004-2007, he led IFC’s advisory business in Latin American advising governments on concessions and public private partnerships (PPPs) of infrastructure assets. He also led a team at IFC doing investments in natural resources and telecommunications in Africa. In earlier stints he did emerging markets private equity investing for Emerging Markets Partnership (EMP) and Marine Midland Bank (part of the HSBC group).
Andrew has an MBA in finance from the Wharton School and a B.A. in economics from the University of Michigan. He is chairman of the board of MFX Currency Risk Solutions. He speaks Spanish and Portuguese.
